FAQ's

What is Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 used for?

Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 is a fibre reinforced self-levelling compound used to smooth and level internal floors before the final floor finish is laid. It is designed mainly for renovation work, which makes it a strong option when an existing floor is uneven, worn or needs bringing up to a suitable standard before tiling or fitting vinyl, carpet, stone or wood flooring. It can be applied from 3mm to 40mm in a single coat, which gives it more flexibility than many standard levelling compounds when deeper smoothing is needed. It is suitable for both domestic and commercial settings and can be applied by hand or pump depending on the size of the job.

What surfaces can it be applied to?

This product is suitable for a wide range of internal subfloors, including existing concrete, screeds, stone, terrazzo and ceramic tiles. It can also be used over old and new timber floors, floorboards, chipboard panels and plywood in dry internal areas, which is one of the main reasons it is often chosen for renovation projects. It is also suitable for use over underfloor and under-tile heating systems. As with any levelling compound, the surface still needs to be properly prepared first, clean, sound and correctly primed, so the product can bond properly and perform as expected.

How do you prepare and apply Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240?

The floor needs to be solid, clean and free from dust, loose material, oil, paint and anything else that could affect adhesion. Timber floors should be firmly fixed, and any open joints should be sealed before application. Cracks in the substrate should also be repaired. Once the floor is prepared, the product is mixed with clean water until it forms a smooth, lump-free compound with self-levelling properties. It is then poured or spread onto the floor in a single application between 3mm and 40mm thick. A spiked roller can be used after laying to help reduce trapped air and improve the finish. This is a product where good prep matters just as much as good mixing, so the result depends on both stages being done properly.

How do you mix Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240?

A 25kg bag should be mixed with 4.25 to 4.5 litres of clean water using a low-speed electric mixer until the compound is smooth and fully blended. It should then be left briefly and re-stirred if needed before use. Once mixed, the working time is around 20 minutes, so it is best to have the area prepared in advance and only mix what can be applied within that window. Getting the water ratio right is important because overwatering can affect performance and finish, while too little water can make the product harder to spread and level properly.

How long does it take to dry and when can flooring be laid?

Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 is designed to be fast setting. It has an approximate setting time of 40 to 90 minutes and is generally walkable after around 3 to 12 hours, depending on site conditions and thickness. Ceramic tiles can usually be laid after 3 to 12 hours. If you are fitting resilient floor coverings or wood flooring, the wait is longer, typically around 24 to 72 hours. In practice, the exact drying time depends on thickness, temperature and site conditions, so it is always worth checking that the screed is suitably dry before laying the final floor finish.

How much does a 25 kg bag cover?

A 25kg bag covers approximately 6m² at 3mm thickness. As you would expect, coverage drops as the depth increases, so rough or uneven floors will need more material. For that reason, it is best to treat the stated coverage as a guide for estimating rather than a fixed rule for every job. If the floor has significant dips or variation, allowing a little extra product is usually the safer option.
