Which Floor Levelling Compound is right for you?
When you’re about to lay new flooring, getting the base level is the single most important step. A smooth, even surface will make every stage that follows easier and longer lasting. Sikafloor offers several different types of floor levelling compound, each made for a particular job.
Choosing the right one depends on what kind of surface you’re working with, how much movement or wear it will get, and how quickly you need to finish. This guide explains what each product does best, so you can pick the one that suits your project.
Sikafloor 122 - A dependable all rounder
If your floor is in decent condition and you just need to even it out before tiling, laying vinyl, or fitting new carpet, Sikafloor 122 is the straightforward choice. It gives a clean, flat surface without fuss. Think of it as the reliable, no-nonsense option for standard rooms where the floor doesn’t move or take heavy loads.
Sikafloor 125 - Added flexibility
For timber floors or areas that might move slightly over time, Sikafloor 125 is the better option. It contains extra polymers that help it flex a little without cracking. Use it on wooden boards, floating subfloors, or rooms where there’s slight vibration or movement. It gives you peace of mind when the base isn’t rock solid.
Sikafloor 131 - For busy areas and hard use
If you’re levelling a space that will see plenty of foot traffic or even light machinery, go for Sikafloor 131. It cures into a stronger, more resilient layer that can handle heavier loads. It’s ideal for garages, workshops, and utility areas that need a tough base rather than a decorative one.
Sikafloor 132 - When speed matters
Sometimes you don’t have the luxury of waiting. Sikafloor 132 sets quickly, letting you lay your floor covering sooner. It’s often used by professionals who need to turn a job around in a day, but it’s just as handy for a homeowner who doesn’t want the room out of action for long. You’ll get the same smooth finish, just faster.
Sikafloor 245 - Perfect for uneven or rough bases
If the floor has deep dips or rough patches, Sikafloor 245 is made for filling those out. It can be applied in thicker layers than the other floor levelling compound compounds and still cures evenly. Use it when you’re working on an older property or a concrete floor that has settled over time. It will bring the whole area up to level and ready for the final finish.
Sikafloor 440 - Designed for underfloor heating and timber
Sikafloor 440 is reinforced with fibres that make it especially good for wooden floors or systems with underfloor heating. The fibres add strength and reduce the risk of cracking when the temperature changes or when the base flexes slightly. If your project involves heat cables or pipes in the floor, this is the one to choose.
How to apply it
- Prepare the surface
- Sweep and vacuum the floor to remove dust, dirt, and debris.
- Repair any loose, damaged, or crumbling sections.
- Make sure the surface is dry, stable, and free from grease or oil.
- Prime the floor
- Apply a suitable primer if recommended for your subfloor.
- Allow the primer to dry as per the instructions before moving on.
- Mix the floor levelling compound
- Follow the mixing instructions on the bag carefully.
- Add the powder to clean water and mix until you have a smooth, pourable liquid with no lumps.
- Pour and spread
- Pour the mixed compound onto the floor while it is still workable.
- Use a trowel or gauge rake to spread it evenly across the surface.
- Remove trapped air
- Run a spiked roller over the wet compound to release any air bubbles.
- Work methodically to cover the whole area.
- Let it cure
- Leave the floor levelling compound to dry completely.
- Check the product data sheet for exact drying times.
As a guide, wait until the surface feels hard underfoot and is no longer tacky before walking on it or laying your new flooring.
